Animals Word Search

By ·Updated

Our animals word search puzzles are a relaxing way to spend a few minutes with the natural world. Each free online grid draws on creatures from forests, oceans, grasslands and back gardens, from the patient heron to the busy otter. The word lists are written for adults and older teens who enjoy a calm, focused puzzle rather than flashing games. Start with an easy grid where every word runs across or down, or pick a medium puzzle with diagonals for a little more challenge. Your progress is saved in your browser, so you can step away and finish later. Prefer bigger letters? Switch on large print at any time.

What words are in the animals word search?

The animals list ranges from back-garden creatures (hedgehog, robin, sparrow, mole) to the wider world (giraffe, kangaroo, walrus, flamingo). Every word is a common English animal name — no cartoon mascots, no zoo brands.

The full animals word bank has 40 words. Each puzzle picks a set from this list, so no two grids are quite the same:

BADGER · BEAR · BEAVER · BISON · CAMEL · CHEETAH · CHIPMUNK · DEER · DOLPHIN · EAGLE · ELEPHANT · FALCON · FLAMINGO · FOX · GIRAFFE · HEDGEHOG · HERON · HORSE · KANGAROO · KOALA · LEOPARD · LLAMA · MOLE · MOOSE · OCTOPUS · OTTER · PANDA · PELICAN · PENGUIN · RABBIT · RACCOON · ROBIN · SALMON · SPARROW · SQUIRREL · TORTOISE · WALRUS · WHALE · WOLF · ZEBRA

Who is this theme good for?

A good all-ages-adult theme: easy to recognise, pleasant to read aloud and well suited to grandparents solving with grandchildren of 13 and up. Animal names are also a classic choice for gentle memory and vocabulary practice.

A solving tip

Animal names often start with less common letters — K for KOALA and KANGAROO, Z for ZEBRA, W for WALRUS. Scan the grid for those first letters and follow each one outwards.

How these puzzles work

Every puzzle is free and plays in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Drag across a word, or tap its first and last letter. Easy grids are 10×10 with words across and down; medium grids are 12×12 and add diagonals; hard grids are 15×15 with words in all eight directions. Press Large print above any grid for bigger letters. Progress is saved on your device, and there is never a timer. New to word searches? Read how to play.
